You described the entire loot system of GW. Run UW hoping for a rare drop, most get garbage, a tiny few get something valuable.
You also described the birthday presents from every year. Instead of giving everyone a seventh year birthday present today, only characters (note it's not accounts, so even people who have been around a long time won't get them if they remade their characters) that are seven years old will get them. Before you even take into account the random chance from the presents, the initial concept is elitist and exclusive to the smallest number of people in the game (those that have had characters for seven years) compared with people who have created characters after that time.

Power trading is actually decently hard to be good at it rather than sell 1-2 drops in the sense of an in game activity being hard.
Buying gold fully agree skilless and you see plenty of that going around even now a days.
Duping items while the actual result when it gets out is of usually very low skill the coder/exploiter that finds it takes a lot of skill. It isn't everyday you can find a bug that huge that in the rest of the computer world would be a high risk 0 day exploit.
I know your point is about the majority of people with these pets, however some were earned in legit manners. I also know a large amount did use shady methods whether it was ripping off someone, account hijacks, duping, botting, and all that kind of malarkey.

Indeed, the information about presents stacking might actually mean we will have more than one present.

Sorry, but as a person who got three accounts to GWAMM and 50/50 nearly solely by farming Kamadan, i have to disagree. It takes some basic wits, it requires some input first to know the price ranges, but then it's not only easy, it's also great fun, as opposed to tiresome mindless farming something else, or exploiting the deserted PvP scene.
So, given what the 7th year presents yield, how much would you sell yours for?

I am still 5 1/2 years away from the time in which I would be receiving a 7th year birthday gift for playing GW, but seeing what they've offered so far - I really am hoping there is more to it than just randomly handing out minis from years 1-5. I really expected there to be something huge for the players that have stuck with the game for seven years... I am disappointed on your behalf.
The thing is - if all you're going to get are recycled minis, that seems like a really big slap in the face for seven years of loyalty... and from what I've seen in the year and a half I've been playing GW, that doesn't seem "in character" for ANet. Certainly they've made mistakes over the years... there's no such thing as a gaming company that doesn't. I've worked for gaming companies with top-notch intentions that end in epic failures in execution - it happens. And it's certainly possible ANet has fallen victim to such an event... but I find it unlikely.
I think there's more to come... that WOULD be in keeping with their character as a company. I think it's going to be interesting to see how this all plays out in the upcoming days.

I love how people talk about "seven years of loyalty".
You could have created a character in beta. Left the game, and come back yesterday and still get the present. How is that loyalty? Age of a character != loyalty.

Yes, there are those about whom that is true... but then there are people like those in my alliance who started in beta and are still playing today. Playing, not just farming events and showing up to pick up their presents.
They love the game, they help newbies (which is how we met), they roll multiple toons to play through the storyline again and again... they contribute to the community here... they support the developer with purchases from the store... and they are not unique. There are many like that.
Is their loyalty negated because loyalty isn't part of it for some of those receiving 7th birthday gifts?

Loyalty is already rewarded. GWAMM is the most prominent example.

I don't understand why you should get something amazing and incredibly for having a 7-year-old character. I understand why Anet should do something special to celebrate 7 years of Guild Wars, but, and I say this as someone with a 7-year-old character, I just don't feel like I should be getting something super special that somebody just starting out has to wait seven years for.
I like what they chose to do this time. I would have preferred an entirely new set of minis (maybe still sticking to purple, gold, and green minis), but I don't feel the offense that some people seem to feel about this. Birthday presents have never been giant, game-changing things, literally or figuratively, and I think that's for the best.

GWAMM is a prominent example? I've been playing since October 2010 - and up until this anniversary event came about, the only thing holding me back from my GWAMM was that I was a) waiting for the next EotN rep weekend to finish two EotN VQs so I could max my Asuran and b) still working to acquire the other 5,000 points I need for sweet & drunk. Well that and I was waiting to finish a couple of missions/VQs in Tyria to maximize my Z-coin profits so I can sell them and get the rest of my Z-keys for my PvP title.
With this anniversary celebration, I can finish it now -
I have 38 of 50 in my HoM. I still have to get my Obsidian armor and some more of my weapons. I will have 50/50 by the time GW2 launches.
So how exactly is GWAMM a reward for loyalty when I've been playing a little over a year and a half, and they've been playing for seven years? And none of this, incidentally, takes into account how much easier several of my titles were compared to what those players had to do to get theirs.
Three words: Spammable drunk points.

Actually doing something in game is showing WAY more loyalty than simply having an account for a long time. You actually have to WORK for GWAMM while birthdays do just require you to create a character.
